Terre a Terre

Sauvignon Blanc, 2009

Australia White

Wrattonbully, South Australia 75cl

A fascinating wine from a close-panted (1.5 m x 15 m) French clone vineyard, hand picked, crushed and cold-settled before fermentation in two French 600-litre barrels (one new, one second use) and 11 older French barriques, then matured in barrel for nine months, lees stirred every two weeks; the sheer intensity of the wine is almost shocking, its minerally structure tightly folded around grassy/citrussy fruit, the oak simply a background whisper. Wow. Screwcap.
96 points, James Halliday May 2010.
This clearly intrigued me, i saw a bottle in Brisbane and am now quaffing it! Grapefruit, pea, hints of gooseberry and greengage on the nose, it's smokey and oaky too. Really dry on the palate, crisp with good acidity, a melange of the aromas are on the palate, gooseberry and grapefruiy, it's smokey and rich but also really tight and lean. It's long and tangy, very distinctive and complex. Not sure how much i like it, it's a one to two glass wine for me, may age well over the next 2-3 years. Very, very interesting wine and style.
