2010 Top 100 Vin de Pays (PGI) Winners

I really like this competition as a way to find some interesting sub £10 wines.
The Top 100 may have altered its name this year, switching from Vins de Pays to Indication Géographique Protégée (IGP)* to reflect the new European wine regulations, but down on the tasting floor the quality of the winning wines was as good as ever. The panel this year was made up of the usual cuvée of journalists, writers, consultants, sommeliers and wine buyers.
The fabulous Paul Mas winery had 10 wines in the top 100 and won three trophies. In September we will have 8 or 9 of these and will do a specific Paul Mas offer, the wines are really fabulous, and great value as I have now tasted them all.
So watch this space we will add wines as more become available. Those that are available are also offered by the case at a special price.

Cazal Viel Grande Reserve Syrah 2007

France

One of the Top 100 Vin de Pays (GPI) winners this year. From mature, low yielding Syrah vines and aged in 50% new French oak barrels. Warm, spicy nose with berry fruits and integrated oak. Bright and juicy with a savoury meaty edge. Not a big style at all, it's got lots of berry fruit with plenty of spice and pepper, the oak is fully integrated and a component that does not dominate. Meaty and savoury and pretty good, almost Crozes like.

Domaine Uby Cotes de Gascogne PGI Sauvignon-Chardonnay-Muscadelle 2009

A Top 100 PGI 2010 winner. A blend of 60% Sauvignon, 20% Chardonnay and 20% Muscadelle. We have shipped an exclusive parcel of this wine. It's perfumed and floral with grapefruit, melon and peach with herbaceous Sauvignon characters. It's crisp and tangy; again grapefruit and grapey tones with real zest. At 11.5% alcohol it's refreshing without being too heavy, a lovely al fresco drink and would also be good with salads and fish dishes. We only have limited stock so buy this whilst you can !

Paul Mas 'Arrogant Frog Ribet White' Chardonnay-Viognier 2009

Recently voted as one of the UK's Top 100 PGI which is the new term for Vin de Pays, meaning Indication Geographique Protégée, why it's called PGI I am not sure. Has an aromatic nose, flowers, honeysuckle, grape and spice, some stone fruits too. It's quite a rich style, lots of extract bright and flowery with peach, nectarine and spice. Nice citrus acidity too keeps it just fresh enough. Lots of flavour and character, really tangy.

Paul Mas 'Arrogant Frog Ribet White' Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Recently voted as one of the UK's Top 100 PGI which is the new term for Vin de Pays, meaning Indication Geographique Protégée. Paul Mas had an incredible 10 wines in the top 100. This is a very attractive Sauvignon Blanc, grassy and herbaceous on the nose with citrus and hints of peach. Tangy and fresh on the palate, refeshingly quite delicate and round, citrus and herbaceous grassy notes too on the palate, crisp but not overlly. Really tasty and easy.

Paul Mas Pays d'Oc Merlot 2009

France

Another of the Paul Mas wines 10 award winners in the this years top 100 Vin de Pays, or as it's now known top 100 PGI. This is a lovely silky, rich Merlot. Ripe plum and cherry on the nose with a touch of oak. It's very soft and approachable with lovely ripe plum and red berry fruit, a touch of spice and creamy oak. The tannins are round and soft and this is an immediate approachable style, with real generosity and great fruit.

We offer selected wines from our list for sale online, so that we can be sure of availability for quick delivery. Wines without a 'buy now' link can be purchased by contacting us.
