Beaujolais 2009 Offer

Our first ever Beaujolais offer, and I am moved to do so by tasting so many thrilling 2009's. It really is the best vintage I have seen and the wines have real ripeness and purity, they drink well young, serve with a light chill now, but the most serious will age. Burgundy guru Jasper Morris MW says in his blog "The real revelation this year, though, is Beaujolais. It comes at a moment when the world seems keen to see a revival of this once iconic region. There is a renaissance in particular among the ‘Crus’, with single vineyard sites coming to the fore. In 2009 almost all the wines seem absolutely lovely, from straight Beaujolais upwards."
Victoria Moore in the Guardian writes, "this is Beaujolais's hour. The 2009 vintage – no, it's not just Bordeaux that gets to make a fuss about this one – is glorious. "They spoke about 1947 and 1949, but my grandfather is 85 and he says he's never seen such good conditions," says Marion Fessy, whose family founded Beaujolais specialists Henry Fessy.
Tim Atkin MW in The Times writes, "I don't need an excuse to drink good Beaujolais, but I too am impressed by the concentration, balance and purity of the 2009's. The best of them are even better than the 2005's, which is high praise. If ever there were a time to start drinking serious Beaujolais, this is it. Did I say serious? Indeed I did. Nouveau may be intended for immediate consumption, but that's not the case with all of the region's wines. Beaujolais doesn't make the most structured and age-worthy of reds, but the leading examples can be kept for three to five years or more. As they mature, they can resemble red Burgundies, taking on the aromas and flavours of aged Pinot Noir."

So there you have it, 2009 is a great vintage throughout Burgundy and more of that later in the year.
Here is quite a large selection of the best I have tried. All the wines are available under bond, please just state when ordering, and of course we can quote you a price.
All wines are available by the half case too, so by all means mix cases and you will get the pro rata case rate.
So dig in and enjoy some of the vest value wines in France and especially from Burgundy. Where else in Burgundy can you buy single vineyard, hand harvested 50+ year old vines for less than £15 a bottle...

Chateau de Pierreux Brouilly 2009

Chateau de Pierreux Brouilly 2009

France

Château de Pierreux is a 80 hectare estate situated in the heart of Brouilly. It is one of the finest domaines in the Beaujolais region, with a magnificent château and winery built during the Renaissance. It has been managed by Jean-Claude Boisset since the 2002 vintage. The vineyards are planted on highly absorbent sandy soil, consisting of pink granite sprinkled with blue volcanic rocks. The 40- 45 year old vines are gobelet, or bush, trained at a density of around 10,000 vines per hectare. Winemaker Patrice Monternier has over 25 years of direct experience working at this estate, inheriting his expertise from his father, who was the winemaker before him. A Burgundian approach in the cellar combined with the undoubted quality of the grapes, ensures the wines distinctive and serious style. No yeasts or enzymes were added, to avoid altering the character of the must. The grapes were 100% de-stemmed and the whole berries cold soaked for three days (this is very different from the whole bunch, carbonic maceration that the majority of Beaujolais undergoes). Once fermentation started, the grapes were crushed gently by foot, twice aday initially and then once a day until the end of fermentation. The wine was aged in large wooden vats for about six months. Ripe red fruits on the nose, cherry and berry, it's a big rich Brouilly, loads of extract and dense berry fruits, meaty too with spice and tannin, like many i am not sure blind i would say gamay... it's still got lovely freshness and energy though. Drink 2011-2015

Classic Brouilly nose leads to a lovely ripe, supple, juicy palate. Red and black berry fruits with a touch of crunchy tannin. Great now and in the mid term.

Chateau Grange Cochard Morgon Charmes 2009

France

Morgon has six specific sites but only really two of note. Whereas Côte de Py is famed for rugged, structured wines, Les Charmes has more clay in the soil and provides a softer, generous style. The Wildings of Grange Cochard have separated out the best of the cuvee to bottle apart. Powerful nose, quite brooding with black fruits and a meaty savouriness. It's a flashy, sexy, opulent Morgon bursting with ripe black fruits. It's quite structured and sure to age well but the sheer energy of the fruit makes it so delicious now. Drink now-2015

Chateau Grange Cochard Morgon Vielles Vignes 2009

Chateau Grange Cochard Morgon Vielles Vignes 2009

France

James and Sarah Wilding have abandoned St Albans for the charms of the Beaujolais countryside and a delightful property close to Morgon – the key lies in the quality of the vineyard holdings, all benefiting from old vines. A really impressive debut. I tried these wines recently without knowing anything about them and after a hard day trying hundreds of wines, the purity and richness of fruit on the wines was striking. Enviromentally farmed, hand picked and aged in oak casks. Intense nose with ripe black fruits, it's rich and full, more like Pinot! The tannins are ripe and it's so lush and silky, yet fresh at the same time. Really attractive.

Domaine de La Chaponne Morgon Cote du Puy Vielle Vignes 2009

Domaine de La Chaponne Morgon Cote du Puy Vielle Vignes 2009

Laurent Guillet is a brilliant young winemaker, fantastic old vines, especially on the Cote de Py - the finest part of the Morgon AC and one of the best areas in all Beaujolais. Traditional cellars with about 15 lined concrete vats. The average age of the vines is 50 years and yields are kept very low. Fermentation is in lined concrete vats and the wine is bottled with the lightest of filtrations the following spring. Laurent’s wines are rich, concentrated and intensely flavoured. Only the best vats make it into Laurent's own wines. The rest he sells in bulk to Duboeuf and Bouchard Père who give him carte blanche, such is the quality of any cuve. Domaine de la Voute des Crozes, Nicole Chanrion Cotes de Brouilly 2009

France

The charming Nicole Chanrion works the 6-hectare property, which has been in her family for many generations, almost single-handedly. Côte de Brouilly from a top producer such as Nicole Chanrion should not be thought of as “almost Brouilly” but something rather more. From the gentle granitic slopes of her vineyard, Nicole makes intensely flavoured, profound wines capable of great complexity with some bottle age. As with so many of these 2009's this is so attractive already. Berry fruits and a touch of earth on the nose, great weight on the palate. Quie meaty with berry fruits and a touch of spice, juicy too. Great now and over the next 3-5 years.

Domaine Metrat et Fils Fleurie Vielles Vignes La Roilette 2009

France

Metrat is a small domaine that has small parcels of vines spread across several communes in Beaujolais. It is owned and run by Sylvain Métrat and his father-in-law Michel Chevalier. This is a traditional domaine with the Gamay grapes being hand-harvested and then undergoing a short fermentation of 6-7 days. The wines are then aged in wooden casks for 6-9 months. The granitic sub-soil of the famous 'Roilette' lieu-dit, allied to a whole-bunch fermentation for its Gamay grapes, are the building blocks that have enabled Metrat fils (Bernard) to construct one of the best wines in the appellation in its Fleurie, VV Roilette. Really attractive nose of deep black cherry with some red fruit freshness too. It's got lovely weight and a lovely bright pure freshness to it. It's lovely and complex and has a great finish.
