A splendid property of some 60 hectares, where the average age of the vines is over 40 years. They produce extremely fine, stylish characterful wines that have excelled in recent vintages. Classic Brouilly nose leads to a lovely ripe, supple, juicy palate. Red and black berry fruits with a touch of crunchy tannin. Great now and in the mid term.

Morgon has six specific sites but only really two of note. Whereas Côte de Py is famed for rugged, structured wines, Les Charmes has more clay in the soil and provides a softer, generous style. The Wildings of Grange Cochard have separated out the best of the cuvee to bottle apart. Powerful nose, quite brooding with black fruits and a meaty savouriness. It's a flashy, sexy, opulent Morgon bursting with ripe black fruits. It's quite structured and sure to age well but the sheer energy of the fruit makes it so delicious now. Drink now-2015

James and Sarah Wilding have abandoned St Albans for the charms of the Beaujolais countryside and a delightful property close to Morgon – the key lies in the quality of the vineyard holdings, all benefiting from old vines. A really impressive debut. I tried these wines recently without knowing anything about them and after a hard day trying hundreds of wines, the purity and richness of fruit on the wines was striking. Enviromentally farmed, hand picked and aged in oak casks. Intense nose with ripe black fruits, it's rich and full, more like Pinot! The tannins are ripe and it's so lush and silky, yet fresh at the same time. Really attractive.

From the leading winery in Cote de Brouilly, this has been in the hands of the Geoffroy family since 1877. The 'Sept Vignes' comes from seven different parcels. Attractive cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose, quite a powerful style with lovely red berry fruits, good acidity and some meaty, earthy notes too, will age well.

A wonderful, traditional 8 hectare domaine, producing robust wines which age extremely well. Well-sited old vines (60-year average) on granite soil. Fermented in lined cement tank then aged in large (40-60hl) old foudre for 6 months prior to bottling. Real Pinot nose, ripe raspberry with red and black cherry. Lovely purity, blind i would probably think this Pinot, and good Pinot! Juicy with silky raspberry and cherry fruit.

Alain’s recipe of old vines, perfectly looked after, giving healthy grapes for traditional vinification pays off every year – but exceptionally so in 2009. This is fine, structured and exceptionally long Brouilly. Ripe fruits on quite a brooding nose, it's bright and fresh with lovely fruit and a dense savoury finish. Great weight and will be a keeper, drink now -2015.

The combination of Serge with his two sons Landry and Samuel makes for an interesting team. There is nothing like sons or daughters coming in to spur their father on. They now own 7.5 hectares of Beaujolais, 20 hectares of Village (which could be in Fleurie) and 7.3 hectares in Fleurie. The average age of the vines is at least 30 years old with some 100 years old. Vinification is traditional in a mix of cement tanks and stainless steel, all in temperature controlled chais. Bright cherry fruit, it's lovely and ripe with crunchy strawberry and cherry fruits, good acidity and ripe taninns. Great villages.

Laurent Guillet is a brilliant young winemaker, fantastic old vines, especially on the Cote de Py - the finest part of the Morgon AC and one of the best areas in all Beaujolais. Traditional cellars with about 15 lined concrete vats. The average age of the vines is 50 years and yields are kept very low. Fermentation is in lined concrete vats and the wine is bottled with the lightest of filtrations the following spring. Laurent’s wines are rich, concentrated and intensely flavoured. Only the best vats make it into Laurent's own wines. The rest he sells in bulk to Duboeuf and Bouchard Père who give him carte blanche, such is the quality of any cuve. Bright black fruits on the nose, it's a beautiful wine, quite rich, yet really juicy with fabulous fruit. It's a fabulous value, such wonderful pure vibrant fruit yet structured underneath, Drink now -2014. Stunning!

Whole grapes are placed in the vat and the grapes are effectively crushed using maceration carbonique (carbonique maceration. Didier also uses a thermo-vinification technique to encourage fermentation. The wine is bottled the May after harvest. Attractive perfume, it's juicy and ripe yet retains some lovely raspberry brightness to it. Soft and easy and quite delicious.

The charming Nicole Chanrion works the 6-hectare property, which has been in her family for many generations, almost single-handedly. Côte de Brouilly from a top producer such as Nicole Chanrion should not be thought of as “almost Brouilly” but something rather more. From the gentle granitic slopes of her vineyard, Nicole makes intensely flavoured, profound wines capable of great complexity with some bottle age. As with so many of these 2009's this is so attractive already. Berry fruits and a touch of earth on the nose, great weight on the palate. Quie meaty with berry fruits and a touch of spice, juicy too. Great now and over the next 3-5 years.

9 hectares, all on La Madone, and an immaculate small winery. Jean-Marc Despres, brother-in-law of Jean-Louis Dutraive, makes a lovely, fine, silky wine. The vines are at the highest point in Fleurie and the wines are very pure, and precise in consequence. Bright, juicy red fruits on the nose and palate, touch herbal on the nose. Lovely and juicy on the palate with concentrated raspberry and cherry leading to a lovely soft finish. Very attractive now and over the next 3-4 years.

One of the region’s genuine superstars with 7 hectares of old vines (50 years plus) ideally situated on the finest granite soils. Fermentation in lined concrete vats and maturation in barriques prior to bottling the following spring. Jacky’s wines are always lush and seductive but have a firm structure and benefit from bottle age. Lovely black cherry nose, it's really soft and easy with ripe tannins though a savoury edge to the finish. This needs time to open out, it's tightly wound at present. Good juicy, richly fruited finish.

Grapes are hand-picked and whole-berry fermented for 5-8 days (maceration carbonique) followed by a further 2 or 3 on the skins in order to keep plenty of aromatic young fruit yet add a splash of subtle tannins to give greater weight. Do not as the back label says drink at room temperature! This is bursting with bright plum, cherry and raspberry fruit, it's really crunchy, fresh and appealing, a light chill would be great. Lovely pure wine.

An old vine cuvee (50 years plus) from the hills of Chiroubles which are mostly on higher slopes above Fleurie. Ripe fruits with a hint of pleasing rusticity. It's rich and full of deeper darker fruit than many blackberries, plum, black cherry, with an almost meaty core and ripe sikly tannins. Bright acidity on the finish makes this a superb wine. Drink over the next 3-4 years.

Metrat is a small domaine that has small parcels of vines spread across several communes in Beaujolais. It is owned and run by Sylvain Métrat and his father-in-law Michel Chevalier. This is a traditional domaine with the Gamay grapes being hand-harvested and then undergoing a short fermentation of 6-7 days. The wines are then aged in wooden casks for 6-9 months. The granitic sub-soil of the famous 'Roilette' lieu-dit, allied to a whole-bunch fermentation for its Gamay grapes, are the building blocks that have enabled Metrat fils (Bernard) to construct one of the best wines in the appellation in its Fleurie, VV Roilette. Really attractive nose of deep black cherry with some red fruit freshness too. It's got lovely weight and a lovely bright pure freshness to it. It's lovely and complex and has a great finish. Drink 2010-2015

This Pouilly-Fuissé producer also has a very small parcel of vines in Juliénas including a patch planted around about 1900. This is vinified with some of the stems, then matured in barrel. It is rich, with deep dark fruit, unusual power for a Beaujolais, and a silky touch from the oak, really quite savoury and long. Needs a couple of years in bottle, mightily impressive.

This is a charming rich and fruity cuvee of Moulin à Vent, vinified in traditional Beaujolais style and then matured in older oak barrels. Deep in colour, this has beautifully attractive rich, ripe fruit which covers the structure beneath, really Pinot Noir like, and Pinot with a few years bottle age! Amazingly charming for Moulin à Vent, approachable early, yet long and complex.
