Bodegas Naia 'K-Naia' Rueda 2009

The Naia winery are in my mind making the best wines of Rueda. This is a fresh, lively blend of 85% Verdejo and 15% Sauvignon Blanc. Peach and gooseberry on a perfumed nose. Crisp and fresh on the palate with zesty citrus fruit, some herbaceous characters, and good acidity. Lovely purity to the wine.

A wonderfully consistent wine and good to see it awarded. 85% Viura, 15% Malvasia aged just 3 months in oak. Aromatic nose of tangy peach, honey, citrus and banana. Creamy and tangy on the palate just a hint of oak, it's really bright and fresh and although young totally integrated.

The second year in a row the fabulous Castrocelta Albarino has been awarded. Attractive lemon zest nose, with lime, white peach and a hint of spice. It's pear droppy and fresh on the palate with zest and tangy citrus fruits, long and minerally. Great value example.

La Bascula 'Catalan Eagle' Terra Alta 2009

A really intriguing, organic white wine. It's an unoaked blend of 65% Garnacha Blanca (Grenache Blanc), 25% Viognier and 15% Roussanne. Really aromatic peachy, spicy nose. Thrilling pure fruit on the palate, tangy white peach, apricot and spice. Long and full yet with really good acidity, very impressive.

Monte Real Reserva Rioja 2004
Spain
A fairly traditional Rioja from the great 2004 vintage. The wine is allowed to mature for 25 months in American oak casks and then aged in bottle for at least one more year before being released.
Garnet coloured with dark cherry, leather, spicy oak and cedar aromas which follow through to the palate. Sweet red ripe fruit and attractive chewy tannins on the palate are balanced by fresh acidity. Rich, warm and classically poised long elegant style.

Tomas Cusine 'Geol' Costers del Segre 2007

The second vintage in a row this wine has been awarded and the new 2007 is great! A blend of 45% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 10% others ?? Intense black fruits and olive, with spice and oak on the nose. Dense and rich on the palate with red and black berry fruits, cassis and plum with spice and creamy, almond like oak. Great finish.

Abadia Retuerta 'Seleccion Especial' Sardon del Duero 2007
Spain
One of my favourite wines in recent years and perennial award winner. A blend ofof 75% Tempranillo with 5% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in new and used French oak. It's a little oaky at present though growing in the glass. Mocha, cream, vanilla and toasty oak with meat and berry fruits. Lots of ripe berry fruit on the palate, again mocha oak and a meaty savoury edge with spice and good acidity.

Bodegas Amaren 'Angeles de Amaren' Rioja 2006

Compared to the Monte Real a much more modern expression of Rioja. Amaren is a separate range from Luis Canas. This is a really outstanding wine, an attractive perfumed nose. It's got bright cranberry and black cherry fruit with spice and well integrated seasoned oak. Good acidity keeps it fresh and the tannins are ripe. Like many of the wines Canas are involved in making it has a fresh modern feel to it, yet with more than a passing nod to tradition.
