Filipa Pato 'Bossa' Branco Vinhos Doidos

Filipa Pato 'Bossa' Branco Vinhos Doidos 2009

Portugal

A side project from the talented Filipa Pato. This is actually marketed under the Vinhos Doidos name which apparently means crazy, Bossa the name of the wine is named after the brazilian dance. I tried it with Filipa in March and was most impressed. It's a blend of two local varieties Bical and Maria Gomes. Made in a simple way to emphasise it's freshness and immediate appeal. Quite floral and grapey on a perfumed nose. It's grapey and peachy on the palate too, again floral with some spice. It's really tangy, fresh and attractive and great summer drinking, characterful and appealing, the spice on the finish also making it a good food wine.

Weingut Wieninger 'Sophie'

Weingut Wieninger 'Sophie' Wiener Veltliner 2009

Austria

This is one of a new range of attractively packaged young wines named after Fritz's children. This is a young fresh Gruner Veltliner. Attractive zesty nose with citrus and peach. It's clean, zesty and spritzy with lovely lemon and lime fruit and a touch of peach. Clean and fresh, not too dry and very attractive. Really lovely wine, so easy drinking, nothing wrong with a touch of residual.

Domaine des Escaravailles Cotes du Rhone

Domaine des Escaravailles Cotes du Rhone La Ponce Blanc 2009

France

Like all good white Rhone wines, although it has an abundance of fruit flavours it remains fresh and pure throughout. This vintage is a blend of 40% Roussanne, 40% Marsanne, 10% Clairette and 10% Grenache Blanc. The nose has attractive stone fruit and fresh apple aromas and the palate has lime character followed by ripe apple and pear flavours too. Delicious now but has enough acidity to maintain balance and develop over the short-term.

Kim Crawford

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2009

New Zealand

A shop favourite for many years now and with the '09 Sauvignon's looking so good I was looking forward to trying this. Quite pale in the glass with a really tightly wound minerally nose of graphite, shale, subtle nettle and herbs, the palate is a little bit more fruity but this is still a very tangy and fresh style with greengage and limey citrus . Very zappy, bright and delicious

Domaine Gerovassiliou Malagoussia 2009

Greece

Epanomi has it's own microclimate, situated close to Thessaloniki. The vineyards are farmed sustainably and in fact the entire Domaine is run this way. This wine is entirely produced from the rare, ancient, indigenous Greek grape variety of Malagoussia. Further to skin contact, to enhance the extraction of aromas, it is fermented in stainless steel tanks between 18-20 °C and then matured on lees for a few months gaining depth of flavour and floral aromas. Aged in new French oak barrels too, not that you would know. Lovely floral, aromatic nose with white peach and hints of lime and grape-it's not unlike Viognier. Crisp, fresh and clean with lovely tangy white peach and lime fruit, it's zesty with some spice and maybe a touch of oak. It makes me think of a cross between Assyrtiko and Viognier. Lovely floral style with good weight and a lovely freshness, would work well with lightly spiced dishes, and also served cool alfresco. Really very good.

Le Grand Cros 'L'Esprit de Provence' Rosé

Le Grand Cros 'L'Esprit de Provence' Rosé 2009

France

This is the brand new 'L'Esprit de Provence'. Made with hand picked grapes using environmentally sustainable farming practices. Classic salmon pink colour. A blend of Grenache and Syrah. The colour really is attractive. Lovely fresh nose with citrus and a touch of red berry. It's dry but with really attractive strawberry and raspberry fruit, citrus and a touch of peach and cherry with subtle spice. Fresh and vibrant, it's really spot on with lovely bright fruit. All very elegant and subtle but lacking nothing. Too many Provence rosé's are just elegant and to me lack fruit, this is elegant with lovely delicate berry fruits. Very easy to drink!

Alpha Zeta 'C'

Alpha Zeta 'C' Corvina 2009

Italy

Corvina is one of the best Valpolicella grapes and these are grown fairly close to that region. It's a light, juicy, vibrant style. Plum and cherry on a bright nose, it's juicy fresh and vibrant with lovely spiced plum and cherry fruit, raspberry too and just a hint of chocolate with very subtle oak. Serve lightly chilled in the summer it's a great al fresco red. Really delicious, and great value.

Cantina di Montalcino 'Poggio del Sasso'

Cantina di Montalcino 'Poggio del Sasso' Sangiovese di Toscana 2009

Italy

It's a lovely fresh Sangiovese, that is seemingly unoaked. Ripe red and black cherry on an inviting nose. It's bright and juicy, medium bodied and full of vibrant cherry fruit, a hint of plum too and soft tannins. It's a lovely appealing drink me style, can take a light chill and was just perfect with some burgers tonight. Uncomplicated yet hugely appealing Sangiovese.

MOKOblack Pinot Noir 2009

New Zealand

A great value £10 Pinot from Central Otago, it's not often value and Central Otago are mentioned in the same breath! Fairly pale colour, the nose displays ripe cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit with a hint of chocolate and oak. It's bright and juicy on the palate lots of sweet raspberry, plum and cherry, nicely integrated oak and good acidity. It's a lovely vibrant mid-weight Pinot. A real drink now style with real freshness and great drinkability. A terrific value.

Cien y Pico 'Doble Pasta'

Cien y Pico 'Doble Pasta' Tintorera 2007

Spain

A brand new wine made from 100+ year old Garnacha Tintorera vines. Very low yielding grapes are traditionally vinified and aged in 20% new French oak for 19 months. Unsurprisingly deep in colour, meaty and savoury on the nose with deep plummy fruit, hints of oak and spice too. It's rich and dense on the palate, meaty and savoury, some perfume too and creamy oak giving the palate a softness and richness. It's got a wild untamed edge to it that's really appealing, the tannins are ripe and crunchy and it has real life and energy to it. It needs full flavoured food, and is an absolute cracker. The jury is out on the label however, but the wine is fabulous.

Trentham Heathcote Shiraz 2006

Australia

The award winning 2005 debut release of this was great. The new 2006 already much lauded may be better still. Quite perfumed with dense red fruits, spice on the nose too with mocha and toasty oak. It's full and rich on the palate with morello cherry and plum, raspberry too. Dense and meaty, has a lovely savoury character, with integrated toasty, creamy oak and black pepper with ripe tannins on the finish. It's quite voluptuous and delicious already but sure to develop. Excellent value too from a region where that is rarely the case. 94 points James Halliday Gold, Sydney Royal Wine show 2010
